In theory, along with being more portable-friendly, the cartridges would also decrease load times for games. The physical copy was always and slowest and the SD cards were in between.

A Nintendo 3DS user recently contacted Nintendo of America’s customer service, and asked about whether digital Nintendo 3DS games could be recovered, if the handheld console was stolen or misplaced. A customer service representative for the company replied by reiterating that all digital content on the Nintendo 3DS is tied to the system itself, and, therefore, lost or stolen digital games and applications purchased from the Nintendo eShop cannot be retrieved.

  • PlayStation 3: retail disc vs. Digital delivery What are the advantages of a PSN download over a disc copy? Do games run better from hard drive?

… I was wondering, should I lose or have my 3DS stolen, is there any way to retrieve the games that I’ve purchased on the eshop? I am curious about your policy on this, and especially when so many young kids play 3DS and could potentially lose them. I know on the iphone and PSP, you are tied to an account to which you can retrieve your games. How does it work for Nintendo? Should I be worried about buying my little nephew eshop points?

3DS: Physical or Digital copy?

Hey all.

As a new 3DS owner, I've been doing my research and there's a big divide on how to purchase games. The e-shop is currently tied directly to your hardware device and your downloads do not transfer over anywhere else. If your 3DS breaks, you lose your games and saves. It's a very huge factor to me vs. the convenience of playing multiple titles at any time and cutting release lines.

Right now I'm leaning on a physical cartridge (can use on any system if my 3ds breaks, possible resale value) but also feel that having Smash installed with me would be a very useful thing.

How do you all personally feel about carrying the game cartridge vs having it installed? Are you concerned about your system breaking and losing your purchase/saves? We all still use and reuse old hardware for years to come (gamecubes/n64/etc) but the way the e-shop is set up currently, I'm very wary of relying on a personal 3DS to determine long term re-playability...
