Hello, Skies fans!

A friend and I have recently undertaken a pretty huge endeavor. We're currently working on putting together an HD Retexture pack for Skies of Arcadia Legends for the Dolphin emulator. We're both pretty big contributors to the Xenoblade HD Texture pack for Dolphin, although all that remains for that game is mostly environments, which neither he or I excel at. He also has contributed to many other texture packs for Dolphin.

We've been huge fans of the game for a while (I still own the Dreamcast discs even though I don't own a Dreamcast anymore :P), and like most of you, wish someone would make an HD remake. We're tired of waiting, improvements have been made to the Dolphin emulator and it's texture system, and we have some spare time.

So far we have most of the UI done, most of the text done, and a bunch of misc. stuff done. We're mostly focused on UI, text, character clothing and weapons and faces for now. My friend is currently doing all of the faces, which is insane since each expression is actually a different texture, meaning he has to do retexture around 80-100 or so faces for each main character. Since helping finish the UI and menu/combat icons (really the only stuff I'm good at drawning), I've focused more on dumping the raw textures from the game for now. I'll probably start retexturing more of the weapons and some of the awesome ships in the game when we get a full clear game with all the dumps.

If you are unfamiliar with Dolphin, the emulator allows you to 'dump' textures as they load into memory, meaning you actually have to view the texture in your game as you play in order to get the base texture you want to redraw; there is no magic export all textures option. You can then create a folder in your Dolphin file directory which will load any textures you place there instead of the textures on the game disc.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot of time and effort to compile all of these dumps, and obviously even more work to redraw and paint each texture accurately and as close to the original as possible, and then test to make sure it lines up with everything else in game. It's a very slow process, so this project could be ongoing for years to come.

Environments are unfortunately neither of our cup of tea, so those will probably come much later, and much more slowly than what we've done so far (we've been working at it a little over a month now). I've been whipping up some quick cloud textures as I go through the game, because those are some of the worst offenders, but once again not my specialty. Although the ones I have put together are much better looking than the pixelated mess of the default textures.

There are still some small issues which we believe cropped up when porting the game from Dreamcast to Gamecube. Some textures unfortunately clip or don't mesh properly, especially some environment textures which are tiled and as you increase Dolphin's resolution scaling (which you need to use in conjunction with the Texture pack). These exist even in the base game without any retextures, but are a lot less noticeable with the low quality textures.

Anyway, we're going to be releasing a beta version of the pack sometime in the near future on the Dolphin forums, in the HD Texture Projects section. It's probably going to stay in beta for a while, as it's just the two of us and we're hand drawing/painting 99% of the textures from scratch. There may be some filtered little things here and there, but mostly they are going to be placeholders until we get around to doing all of it.
